While institutions of higher education
often take swift and successful action to protect students from the
threat of violence coming from the area surrounding a campus, the
acknowledgment of crimes committed on campus by students against other
students is virtually non-existent.
Facing the reality of student-on-student crime can threaten a university on many levels. An administration can be blamed for enrolling violent students. An institution can be blamed for not implementing better safeguards for protecting students on-campus. Campus adjudicators can be hesitant to sanction an offender for fear of jeopardizing the school's reputation and consequently jeopardizing their own jobs. Student-on-student crime and a school's responsibility to prevent it are issues colleges and universities have successfully avoided addressing by denying that these crimes occur at all. The isolation of victims enabled this denial, but the Internet has helped victims find one another and band together. If you are a survivor, know that you can fight back against the indifference and dismissal you are facing. If you are an ally, know that you are standing alongside millions of women and men across the country seeking to put to an end to a system that revictimizes the victimized. It is our hope that SCAR can become a national network, enabling others to file Title IX and Clery complaints, to compare and contrast the treatment afforded to students at one school against another, and in essence support each other across the great distance felt so keenly by those who have lived through gendered violence. EXPERIENCE WITH THE LAPD SEX CRIMES UNIT?
The Coalition is currently seeking information from citizens in the Los Angeles area whose reports of domestic violence or acquaintance rape were not properly investigated or were dismissed by LAPD, or whose cases were ultimately denied prosecution by the District Attorney's office. We are particularly interested if your case was handled by Detective Derek Fellows.
